Contestant Selection
To compete, hunters must be able to prove their exemplary hunting skills and abilities. The number of years hunting, average number of days spent afield, involvement in outdoors sports as a whole, and personal descriptions and reasoning as to why they believe they are among the best whitetail deer hunters in the country are all part of the submission packet. There is no entry fee requirements for 2010 competitors and the digital scope will be provided for use during the competition.
The Technological Difference
What sets the AWA Whitetail Pro Series apart from all other deer competitions is the use of technologically advanced digital scopes. These scopes give the AWA unprecedented flexibility because we can compete beyond state-mandated hunting seasons. When a competitor has a deer in his crosshairs and pulls the trigger, a digital image of what is seen through the scope is recorded. Because competitors use blank cartridges, when the shot is fired there is no bullet and no deer will be harvested. Rather, important information about what was seen through the competitor’s scope, such as approximate antler and body size, age class and location of the crosshairs will be saved for later viewing and evaluation by the judges.
The Events
We will hold two events in each region (North and South) with a full field of 10 competitors. Two full days of scouting will be allowed, then the three-day competition will begin. The full field of participants will hunt the first two days of the competition. After Day Two, the field is cut and the 5 lowest scoring participants are eliminated. On Day Three, the 5 highest scoring participants will continue to hunt and compete for the event title. At the end of Day Three, competitors will be ranked according to their final, cumulative scores. The top 3 competitor(s) will then become eligible to participate in the AWA World Championship — 12 qualifying competitors in a three-day competition that will name the AWA World Champion.
Scoring
Our scoring system rewards hunters who can consistently encounter and make clean shots on multiple, mature whitetail deer, and reflects an ethical responsibility toward wildlife management. As such, antler size and mass, a deer’s age class and antlerless deer/does will all play a role in determining final scores. Other factors that could impact a contestant’s score are firearm and hunter safety practices, sportsmanship and shot placement. At the end of each day of competition, a contestant can submit up to five digital images of different deer for scoring. A panel of judges will evaluate the image and determine the final score. Competitors will then be ranked according to their daily score.
